Top nine tips to motivate and engage your child in learning in Covid Times

The year 2020 has been a difficult
time for us, specially so for parents and students. We wonder how much are our
children engaged in learning? Are they retaining what they learn? Some students
say they are fed up of studying this way. What is the solution?
Here are a few tips to help your child
remain motivated during these difficult times.
1. Reading is important. It
builds a love for learning as it generates further curiosity. Either they read
on their own or you read with them. Let them choose the reading material.
2. Let your child decide when and what
to study. You provide support and guidance. The lesser your control, the more
motivated they will be.
3. Create
an open atmosphere for discussion. Make
your child feel comfortable expressing his likes, dislikes or concerns. If
child can be open about their educational experience without being judged, put
down, discouraged or ignored, they are free from worry.
4. Encourage him/her
to explore
topics and subjects that interest him/her.
5. Help your child discover
his preferred learning styles. This will improve his quality of learning.
There are seven fundamental
learning styles: Visual, Auditory, Verbal, Physical, Logical (mathematical),
Social and Solitary. For example, children who are visual learners learn best
by seeing how things work.
6. Make
learning fun through game based learning. Who does not like games?
Games are stimulating and fun. They provide the added advantage of motivating
children to want to engage in the learning process and want to learn more.
7. Concentrate
on learning and not performance. Ask your child what he learnt in
school and not how he performed. This will convey your concern for him and
motivate him/her further.
8. It is important to emphasise
on your child’s strengths though it may be difficult when the student
needs improvement. However, it is positive reinforcement which will motivate your
child to study better.
9. Celebrate
your child’s achievements. Nothing can be more motivating!
These are proven strategies that will motivate your child to learn. Apply them correctly, and you'll see your child or student discover the joy of learning.
