10 tips to help your child build up her writing skills

A chance to design the way forward for education - Wikiprogress

Children express themselves in many ways. Whether it be art, craft, dancing or singing, they enjoy expressing themselves. Writing too is an expression of their thoughts.

Today, writing has become a difficult and boring task as we ask children to write dull meaningless assignments for an unknown audience. They also complain of what to write. They don’t seem to have the correct words to express themselves. They are not confident writers. What then is the solution to this?

Here are some hacks to help you.

1. Select a topic your child will enjoy writing. Discuss before assigning the task.

2. Create a spark! Do something different. (Play a game, watch a movie together) Ask your child to write on it immediately. Compare your perspective with her.

3. Ask simple questions to build up a story. E.g. Who are the characters in the story? Are they people or animals or a fantastic creature? Are they in trouble and so on…

4. Let their creative juices flow. Do not argue or say that their ideas are unreal or incorrect. Let your child’s imagination take wings. Do encourage them to create and think of new ideas.

5. Ignore spelling mistakes. When we expect them to write only words they know to spell, we limit what children will write to the words they can confidently spell. Correct in the final draft.

6. Encourage your child to begin with anything they can write. Soon, the creative juices will flow.

7. Let your child write for a few minutes every day. Encouraging your child to maintain a journal or diary helps as they write their daily happenings.

8. You write too. You will be surprised how engaged your child will be in your assignment. This will surely motivate her.

9. You can even co-author a story with your child. Discuss and write together.

10. Lastly, read every day. Reading builds language, vocabulary and imagination!

Happy writing!
